Challenging Behavior: A Winning Strategy

I want to tell you about Deb.

Deb D. completes developmental screenings for 3-5 year olds for Jefco Public School’s Child Find program in Colorado.

Like all good early childhood professionals she’s been looking for ways of better engaging children, especially those that have social/emotional/behavioral concerns.

She wrote to me to say that she recently learned the idea of using a puppet to connect with and engage with children. She says...

“I decided to try using a puppet which I did for the first time this morning and the result was wonderful…

The mother was surprised at how well her child cooperated and the puppet really helped to put the child at ease.

I know the puppet may not yield the same results with all children, but when it does it makes my job so much more joyful and a pleasant experience for the child and their family. “

Deb is an action-taker.

She learned just a little bit about a “winning strategy” (her words, after she tried using puppets), a new strategy for her, and immediately put it into action.

By doing so she was able to connect with a child with a wonderful and cooperative result!

Now she’s got a new great strategy to use with children who may be hard to connect with and who present challenging behavior or are simply seeming uncooperative.

Deb writing to me reminded me of all the all the teachers posting in our Facebook Group during the 2019 Transform Challenging Behavior Online Conference. Teachers who learned new things, immediately put them into action, and reported wonderful results!

Including, PUPPETS!
