"We were cleaning up for lunch. It was not play time. One child saw a dinosaur display in the classroom and walked over saying “dinosaur”. I stopped and took a minute to look at the display with him. Then, I said, “ok let’s clean up for lunch”. The child started screaming "dinosaur!" I explained it was time to clean up but he kept screaming dinosaur. Eventually he melted down screaming and falling onto the floor."
"On Monday I brought some chalk and a chalkboard outside for the children to play with. One child, Michael, asked me to open the chalk. I opened the chalk box and he grabbed it out of my hand and dumped all the chalk out. He began lining them up. I told him he needed to take it from me nicely. Then, I took the chalk back to let him ask nicely, but instead he hit me and another child. From there he just hit and yelled and ran away from me all day.
"I was trying to get a child who was yelling to use their inside voice. I went down to the child's level and spoke in a calm tone, asking the child "what kind of voice do we use in the classroom?" The child took their finger to their mouth as if to say quiet voice. But then, just a few seconds later, the child is back to using their outside voice and I am constantly going over and reminding this child to use their inside voice. I have tried many strategies and this child still continues to use their outside voice while inside of the classroom."
